Here’s an excerpt from the first book in THE Dear Dee Dee… BOOK SERIES:
When I was eight, my family moved from Michigan to Huntsville, Alabama (that is the place I call “home”). Before we even moved, I asked my Mom to please, please find a gym for me to practice my gymnastics. She found one! A gym called Bama Aerials.
Wow! This gym was a lot different than my first gym! Bama Aerials had lots of really good gymnasts there. A lot of my new teammates were older than me, and had been competing for several years. This was such a good thing, because I was able to learn from my coaches and my teammates. My teammates thought of me as their “little sister,” and we all got along really well. We worked hard in the gym, and we also spent time together doing fun things outside the gym like having sleepovers, going to movies and, sometimes, some of my teammates babysat me when my parents went out to dinner. I had so much fun with all my teammates. And they were all very special because they noticed that I had big goals as a gymnast, and they encouraged me to reach them. I was very blessed and lucky to have such wonderful teammates who loved me and supported me as I grew in the sport.
When I was 10 years old, I talked to my parents and told them that I thought I had gone as far as I could go at Bama Aerials, and that I wanted to train with the coaches at a gym about three hours away in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This gym was Bama Bounders. My parents were very loving and supportive too, and they wanted me to be happy. They let me move to Tuscaloosa and train with the coaches there. At first, I lived with my coaches and a few other families my coaches knew. But I got too homesick, so my Mom’s job gave her a transfer to an office in Tuscaloosa. This turned out to be awesome, because I could stop being homesick and concentrate on gymnastics.
